Our client, an established Public Accounting Firm with well established connections throughout the North West Territories and other areas in Canada seeks to engage a Tax Manager to lead its tax practice based in Yellowknife, NWT.?

The individual sought will ideally have three to five years of tax experience and a genuine interest in addressing the income tax needs for a mixed portfolio of clients including small to medium sized owner-operated business, hospitals, municipalities, non-profit organizations, Aboriginal organizations and Government.? He or she will focus on reducing the risk of material errors in the financial statements and tax returns prepared for clients.?

The Tax Manager is expected to achieve client satisfaction in areas such as risk or identification of tax planning opportunities.? He or she is expected to assist the Partners in researching issues and providing pro-active tax planning alternatives.? Transfer of knowledge to other professional staff is key task at this level within the tax department.?

The individual engaged will demonstrate a high level of commitment to client services and recognition and acceptance in meeting the goals and development requirements of the firm.? Attitudinally, the individual engaged must be able to take on a \"partner\" as opposed to \"employee\" viewpoint.?

The successful candidate must be able to bring a high degree of ethics, quality of work, professionalism and effectiveness to his or her role.? He or she will aspire towards continuous professional and personal growth.?

The Tax Manager will gain the respect of Partners, all firm staff and clients.? He or she will develop a professional and mutually co-operative working relationship with the staff.? He or she will also build and maintain professional relationships with external contacts e.?g.?, CRA, government tax ministries, CAs outside of the firm and other professional and senior industry staff.?

Supervise tax staff and delegate work to tax staff as appropriate.?

Perform review of tax and other relevant sections in CaseWare working paper files e.?g.?, corporate tax returns, personal tax returns, charity T2s, information returns.?


Delegate work to staff based on complexity of assignment, staff availability and deadline considerations.?


Apply Income Tax Act and other tax technical information to given client situations.?


Conclude research as required i.?e.?, if the nature of the tax item or its monetary value warrants in-depth investigation.?


Discuss issues with staff, partners, clients and CRA as needed in order to bring assignment to completion.?


Document resolution of issues i.?e.?, technical tax information, other discussions or emails.?


Address client enquiries re: notices of assessment and other documentation from tax authorities.?


Answer technical questions from audit, accounting and administrative staff.?


Keep current with changing tax laws.?


Implement improved and more efficient work processes.?


Prioritize and re-prioritize workflow including utilization of tax staff, and other firm staff under the Tax Manager\'s direction.?


Manage personal tax season ensuring the use of current year letters, checklists and new templates in TaxPrep to monitor progress of T1 preparation.?


Train professional and administrative staff on tax season procedures and processes.?

As a senior member of the team, contribute to the development of new services.?



Canadian CA designation.?


CICA In-Depth Tax Course.?


3 years post In-Depth practical tax experience, with exposure to a broad range of client tax issues.?


Previous responsibilities to support appropriate level of skill, professional competence and judgement.?


Significant amount of prior client contact to effectively deal with clients and engagement demands.?


Proven research, investigative, analysis and problem-solving skills.?


Demonstrates a full understanding of and high commitment to firm standards, quality control procedures, independence and ethics.?


Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure.?


Effective use of research tools and resources.?


Through continuing professional development and self learning, the Tax Manager must stay abreast of current developments within the profession and client specific developments.?


Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.?


Proficiency in software programs including CaseWare, CaseView, TaxPrep, MS Word and Excel.?


Excellent compensation - salary plus participation in several mutually exclusive bonus programs.?

Total compensation will go well beyond the norm for positions at this level.?

Overtime - anything in excess of 1950 hours a year is considered overtime (compare to many other accounting firms who base their salary on 2100 hours).?
